Sports have shaped nearly every chapter of my life. Playing soccer for the University of Wisconsin-Madison taught me discipline, resilience and what it means to be part of a team. It also showed me how much of an athlete’s success is affected by their mental health. The pressure, self-doubt and voice that says you’re not good enough are just as real as any opponent on the field.
When I coached for the Madison 56ers Soccer Club, I saw this up close. As early as ages 11 and 12, many girls start to second-guess themselves, compare themselves to others and quietly step back from things they love. I watched talented, joyful kids lose confidence over a missed shot. I also saw how quickly they lit up when someone believed in them and gave them the language to believe in themselves. That’s why Girls on the Run of South Central Wisconsin means so much to me. GOTR uses movement and evidence-based programming to build what lasts far beyond any game. That includes confidence, emotional awareness, healthy coping skills, a sense of belonging and so much more.
As a board member for this wonderful organization, I get to see firsthand the impact these programs have on girls across South Central Wisconsin, and I’d love for you to be part of it. Every gift helps a girl lace up, cross her first finish line and walk away knowing she’s capable of more than she ever imagined. Thank you for running alongside me this giving season!
