Have you Heard About Maya?
Maya has Cerebellar Hypoplasia, which causes her to have low muscle tone and poor balance, making it difficult for her to walk unassisted. In 4th grade, Maya decided to join Girls on the Run (GOTR) because she wanted to make new friends and be more comfortable with herself.
Her family was concerned she wouldn’t be able to finish that first 5k. But she did. With the help of a running buddy, she completed the full 3.1 miles while using a walker. Her teammates even ran back a mile from the finish to encourage her to cross that finish line.
“Nobody thought I could do that. I didn’t think I could do that and I did.”
Maya has participated in four GOTR 5ks. Each one is really tough for her, but she’s finished every single one. She has progressed from using a walker to two crutches to one crutch, and was even able to walk across the finish line unassisted at this past 5k.
Maya and her team truly embody the spirit of GOTR, showing that you can still do those really difficult things in life, especially with the support of your friends. We believe in empowering girls to be the authors of their own stories and to realize their power to impact the world.
Because of our compassionate donors, we are able to provide this inclusive and life-changing program to girls of all abilities. Our program costs us $160 per girl. Through generous donations, we are able to offer the program as low as $40 to lower income households and even provide full scholarships to those in need.
