In late July 2024, approximately 1,700 acres of Upper Bidwell Park in Chico, CA were impacted by the Park Fire. Held dearly by many as the “Crown Jewel” of Chico, it is where thousands of residents go for outdoor recreation and enjoyment. Through the efforts lead by the City, support from Chico Velo Trailworks made it possible to reopen a portion of the trails quickly and safely. We inventoried the trails, assessed hazards, deployed signs and barriers, and assisted in the mapping for recreational accessibility. This collaboration between the City, Trailworks Crew Leaders, and community members so far has added up to 60 volunteer hours! Thanks to the quick response, recreational users only had about 24 days of trail closures. Since then, Trailworks has held numerous work days to prepare the trails most heavily impacted in the burn scar. Trail work season is usually later in the fall, but duty called and many answered.
There is still much work that needs to get done to bring our park and trails back to it's pre-fire glory, and we appreciate your donation to help make that happen!
