"The pride that all of the girls felt when they completed the practice 5K for the first time is so heartwarming. It’s easy to tell how hard they are working and how happy they feel to have done something challenging."

Cherrie Layton Coach of the Year Award

At the Fair Oaks Mall 5K we took a moment to honor and remember someone incredibly special to our GOTR community. Our community recently lost Cherrie Layton who was both a coach and driving force with Sinclair Elementary for over 20 seasons. Through her guidance and encouragement, she instilled confidence, resilience, and determination in close to 500 young girls, shaping them into empowered individuals ready to conquer any challenge ahead.

Girls on the Run of Northern Virginia is proud to announce the creation of the Cherrie Layton Coach of the Year award that will be presented to a GOTR coach each spring who embodies Cherrie’s spirit of dedication, empowerment, and resilience. We look forward to awarding the first ever recipient of this award in Cherrie’s honor at our spring 2025 5K event.

This spring, GOTR NOVA welcomed one returning and two new interns, providing them with opportunities to develop existing skills and gain new ones. Become a Coach

Girls on the Run coaches are trained volunteers who lead a team of participants through a season of powerful and fun lessons. You do not need to be a runner; you simply need to have a desire to support and encourage the next generation. Coaches receive all the tools and support they need and find that they get as much out of coaching as they give.
